Conclusions
  • These initial results demonstrate feasibility.

  • More study is needed.
    • The instrument was poor, and not sufficiently adapted to the age of the children. There was much confusion, especially in the inner city group. Negatively worded questions were especially problematic.
    • The sample size was small - and reduced dramatically when a third of the data were contaminated and needed to be discarded.
    • There was no comparison made with alternate interventions that might afford a similar change less expensively. This is a benefit of the Yuker instrument: a large body of data exists testing the effect of such technologies as motion pictures, etc.
    • A follow up study that determines whether there was any lasting effect is certainly in order.
    • Conversely, the effect of prolonged play also merits study. Five minutes is not realistic.
